Street 104, that is where you go for the top lady bar experience Phnom Penh has to offer. The short, little walkable portion is lined with bars that have existed for decades. That matters. Well-established bars with reputations to protect are kind to tourists.
Oscar’s, Zanzibar and The Factory are reasonably priced joints. The staff are friendly. And the patrons are a laid-back mix of expats, long-term wanderers and newcomers. You do not seem like a target here. You feel like a guest.
Street 104 bars display the prices of drinks. So before you descend upon your seat, cast an eye over the menu. And if you go into a bar and they won’t show you prices first, then just walk the fuck out. Better Places are very close by.
This is where many tourists make a mistake. Not difficult to handle, but you need to continue being mindful.
This is how to follow through with your bill correctly:
So don’t overthink it. Just beware and you will be fine.
Phnom Penh red light district is well-known, but in general you can avoid any problem. The scams that target tourists are nearly always the same ones. Get to know them, and you won’t become a victim.
The inflated tab scam. A bar charges you for drinks you did not order. Solution: count your drinks as you go, and verify the bill line by line before paying!
The fake “lady drink” markup. You purchase a girl a drink — that seems fair. But some just charge like $10–$15 for a drink that they have listed as $5. Workaround: Inquire beforehand what is the price for a lady drink before ordering one. Any honest bar will tell you.
The “short change” move. You give over $20, you have change for a $10. Solution: count your change at the bar, not in your pocket later.
The tuk-tuk upsell. One guy “knows a good bar” and then takes you somewhere that gives him a cut. Fix: use Grab or PassApp. Pick your own bar. Let us not let someone listen for us
But the thing is, Street 104 bars almost never have these problems. Do not stray from the main strip, and then you’re already winning.
One night on Street 104 is fun. But two or three visits, even on the same trip, change everything.
The staff start to know your name. They remember what you drink. And the whole night feels less like a transaction and more like hanging out with people you know. That’s a rare thing in any bar city, and Street 104 delivers it.
And there’s a practical side too. Regulars often get better service. You’re less likely to get an inflated bill when the bartender knows your face. You’re more likely to get a heads-up if something’s off.
So don’t just bar-hop once and move on. Go back. Pick a spot you like. Let it become your spot. That’s how you turn a decent night out into a great one — and how you stay safe while doing it.
