We are talking one night in Phnom Penh. You want to go out. But you’re also hitting with one big question: Street 104 or Street 136?
Both streets have bars. Both have cold drinks. And both attract crowds after dark. But they’re not the same. Not even close. The vibe, the crowd is all different that too such a huge difference. Here’s a breakdown so you can choose the best one for your evening.
Street 104 has seen the block in a good way. Close to Riverside, it is one of the oldest bar street in Phnom Penh. And it shows. The entire strip has a sort of old-school, laid-back vibe that many people appreciate.
You won’t hear blaring music from every single door. What you receive instead is open-air bars with wooden stools in addition to chilled Angkor beer. The crowd here is a mix. Long term expats, locals and even travelers that have been in the city for a while. Not a venue for larger groups who want to dance Its really more for those looking to sit and chat for a bit, enjoy the night, not scream over low frequency drops.
Basically Street 104 is the go-to place which where you can have an actual proper conversation. Bar staff know the regulars. The prices are fair. And no one is there trying to give you the boot.
But don’t think it’s boring. Street 104 still comes alive over weekends. You may encounter venues featuring live music and an atmosphere that vibrates out onto the sidewalk. It just doesn’t try too hard. That’s kind of the point.
Now, Street 136 is a totally different beast! This is where the party gets louder and stays later.
Street 136 bars are flashier. The lighting is brighter. The music is harder. And the crowd is a little younger mostly backpackers and short-term visitors who might want to maximise one night. This is your street and if you want to dance.
You will encounter a line of closely located bars. They all tried to suck you in. The happy hour deals run long into the night. Flyers are handed out at the door by promoters. If that is not your thing, it can come across a little too aggressive.
But there is a catch: if you are in a big group and have yourself set for some serious bar hopping night, then Street 136 bars come in handy for that. The spots are close together. It is fairly easy to transition from one to another. And there’s always something happening.
It’s loud. It’s busy. And, true to its reputation, the action only lets up well after midnight. For some people, that’s perfect.
The truth of the matter is that, for many, Street 104 wins.
It is not a matter of how many bars there are on one street vs. another. It’s what type of night you really want. When you’re on the road and are sick of all the tourist bustle, Street 136 can be a bit much. There’s quite a lot going on, and it isn’t all fun if you are not in the mood.
Street 104 lets you breathe. You can go at your own speed. You do not feel like an easy mark for every promoter on the street. And the drinks don’t upcharge simply because your pee stream is new here.
That surely is easier on the pocket as well. Street 104 bars don’t inflate their prices the same way some Street 136 spots do. Live it up at night without worrying about your finances all evening long.
What if it’s just one or two of you traveling alone? Street 104 is definitely the way to go. Well, in a low-pressure environment, it is more straightforward to connect with people. You need not raise your voice to be heard. You can simply turn up and wait and see.
If you are in a group, looking to dance, and okay with crowds, head to Street 136. One of the most energetic and all-nighters.
The place to go if you want cold drinks, good chat, and a relaxing night sans the raucous is Street 104. Less serious, less hectic, more chill, and easier to get into.
Can’t decide? Early in the evening, begin on Street 104. Get warmed up. Then make your way to Street 136 if you want to really floor it later. That way, you get the best of both worlds — and can decide for yourself which one is more suitable for your needs.
Regardless, the nightlife in Phnom Penh does not disappoint.
